Day of the Badger is coming up on April 8th and 9th. This year we are highlighting four key Natural Resource Institute programs—Upham Woods, the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS), Water Action Volunteers (WAV), and the Wisconsin Master Naturalist Program. From environmental education, to sediment mapping, to stream monitoring, these programs do so much for the community.
Upham Woods
Give the gift of adventure and growth this Day of the Badger! Upham Woods is a residential outdoor learning center that connects people with the University of Wisconsin–Madison, offering environmental, outdoor, and recreational programs and activities for youth and adults. By donating to Upham Woods, you are supporting the Wisconsin Idea of extending the university’s resources and expertise to every family and corner of the state.

For decades, Upham Woods has been a place where connections are forged with nature, with each other, and with the University of Wisconsin–Madison. This year, we’re celebrating the legacy of Patricia Buchanan, a naturalist and teacher whose love story at Upham Woods led her to meet her husband and then bring countless students here over the course of her teaching career. Peanut Butter Mountain (PBM), our popular low-element challenge course, was created in her honor in the late 90s. But now PBM needs our help! Stairway improvements will make this vital resource more accessible, ensuring that future generations can experience the same transformative leadership and teamwork opportunities. Your gift will honor Patricia’s memory and ensure that Upham Woods continues to inspire youth and adults alike for years to come.
Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey
The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) is a state program that conducts natural resources surveys and research to produce information used for decision-making, problem-solving, planning, management, development, and education. WGNHS maps Wisconsin’s geology, mineral resources, and water resources, and shares its findings through publications, technical talks, and outreach.
By donating to WGNHS, you are supporting the Wisconsin Idea of extending the university’s resources and expertise to every family and corner of the state. Your contribution will help WGNHS continue to serve Wisconsin for another 125 years.

Water Action Volunteers
As a UW-Madison Extension program, we’re excited to once again participate in Day of the Badger to celebrate the Wisconsin Idea in action and raise funds for Water Action Volunteers!
Your donation helps to fund our mission to provide free stream trainings, water quality monitoring equipment, and learning opportunities that engage volunteers of all ages in the monitoring and stewardship of our state’s beautiful streams and rivers.

With over 45,000 miles of wadeable streams and rivers in Wisconsin, WAV volunteers play a critical role by expanding on the work of professional biologists, ensuring that more of our waters can be regularly monitored and protected.
Donations help expand volunteer stream monitoring and stewardship across Wisconsin by funding training, equipment and educational materials.
Every $400 we raise supports WAV volunteers monitoring a new stream site in Wisconsin.
Master Naturalist
Support UW–Madison Division of Extension’s Master Naturalist Program! Our passionate network of volunteers and instructors is committed to conservation service, leadership, and lifelong learning. Adults participate in enriching nature-based education and give back to nature through volunteer service, donating 73,910 volunteer hours in 2024.
By donating to the Wisconsin Master Naturalist Program, you are championing the Wisconsin Idea—bringing the university’s resources and expertise to communities across the state. Your generous contribution empowers us to continue teaching, learning, leading, and serving the people and natural wonders of Wisconsin.
Take action today! Support the Wisconsin Master Naturalist Program and be a part of something truly transformative. Donate now and help us make a lasting impact on the natural world and local communities.

Your financial support can make a significant impact on the Wisconsin Master Naturalist Program:

- Program support: Donations assist with administrative and operational costs, allowing the program to maintain a statewide network of partner organizations and volunteers dedicated to the mission.
- Educational materials: Your donations help cover the costs of educational materials and resources, enhancing the learning experience for all participants.
- Recognition efforts: Your support helps recognize the Master Naturalists leading local conservation projects, such as habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, and environmental education initiatives.
- Advanced training: Contributions enable the program to offer advanced training opportunities, ensuring Master Naturalists stay up-to-date on the latest conservation techniques.
