Winter is a season of small wonders: the first snow, a frozen lake, a perfectly formed icicle. Although cold weather may make us creatures of the indoors, this scavenger hunt invites you to bundle up and explore what’s outside your door. Feed the birds, watch the stars and pay attention to the small things (like snow fleas!) on your way to becoming a Neighborhood Naturalist.
Developed in partnership with the Wisconsin Master Naturalist program, this Neighborhood Naturalist scavenger hunt is the third in a series that introduces kids and their families to the concept of phenology and encourages them to spot signs of the seasons in their backyards and nearby greenspaces. Vast wilderness is not required! These challenges are designed to apply to a variety of landscapes, both urban and rural, across Wisconsin.
Print the gamecard or check off boxes via smartphone or tablet. The more challenges kids complete, the more badges they earn. Regardless of completion, this scavenger hunt is a great way to get outdoors and off screens while maintaining safe social distancing.
