Land and Forest Stewardship – Woodland Owners
Land and Forest Stewardship
To support thriving forests and working lands, we provide outreach and education programs supporting private woodland owners, forest products professionals, and conservation professionals. We also partner with towns, cities, villages, and counties across the state to foster collaborative stewardship and restoration ensuring Wisconsinites can make informed land management decisions today and tomorrow.

Supporting Woodland Owners
Extension’s forestry educators lead classes and build programs to engage landowners in the sustainable stewardship of Wisconsin’s privately owned forests.

Learn About Your Land
Every year, the Extension Forestry program hosts a series of classes helping woodland owners learn about how to keep their woodland healthy and how to get assistance from their local DNR forester and other professionals. Common topics include controlling invasive species, conducting successful timber sales, and holding family conversations about the future of your woodland.

Wisconsin Stewardship Plan Project
Two common barriers to woodland stewardship are finding a forester to work with and paying for a formal stewardship plan. This project helps woodland owners overcome both barriers by connecting them with a forester who will write their forest stewardship plan at no cost to them.

Women Owning Woodlands
This program connects women landowners with each other and with natural resources professionals. Woodland owners can attend our in-person chainsaw workshops to learn how to safely operate and maintain chainsaws to participate in land management activities on their property.

Wisconsin Coverts Project
In this annual workshop, woodland owners learn how to enhance the habitat on their land for wildlife, including amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Attendees receive training from forestry and wildlife professionals in the classroom and in the field, and make lasting connections with other woodland owners.
