Wood Products

Wood Products

Forests and the wood products that come from them are a powerful economic engine in Wisconsin. The forest products industry employs over 126,000 people and contributes $42 billion to the state’s economy each year. Extension works with the forest products industry to keep Wisconsin at the forefront of technological and innovation advancements. Through sharing new knowledge and technology, we help companies prepare for new trends, test production techniques to develop cost-effective methods and inform managerial decision-making.

Whom We Serve

A resaw sawmill. The large log-like pieces are red oak cants that are being quartersawn to produce a specific grain pattern in the wood. The large machine in the background with the yellow safety guards is the resew which will saw a board from the bottom of each cant.

How We Help

  • We lead immersive courses that prepare potential and current employees working in forest products manufacturing for roles that are critical to primary and secondary wood operations. We offer a Kiln Drying Short Course, Hardwood Lumber Grading Short Course, Sawing, Edging, and Trimming Short Course, and an immersive forest operations workforce development course in Tomahawk, and workshops tailored to stakeholder needs.
  • We offer forestry and wood products courses and curricula for high schools to introduce students to careers in the forest industry.
  • We conduct applied research in partnership with industry associations, the Department of Natural Resources, and the National Forest Service to address their needs and create useful resources for production and managerial decision-making.
